Landseer, Sir Edwin Henry (1802-1873), English painter, sculptor, and engraver, born in London. He achieved a reputation for his astutely realistic portrayals of dogs, usually in gallant poses of highbred species. He also painted deer, eagles, and other wildlife, generally conveying moral sentiments in his pictures. From many of his works, such as Titania and Bottom (1851), his brother, Thomas Landseer, made engravings, which gained wide popularity. Sir Edwin executed the four bronze lions at the base of the Nelson monument in Trafalgar Square, London, in 1867. Less well known are his small oil sketches and his drawings, which are his finest work.
